Chapel
Perhaps situated in the most beautiful part of Szigliget is our chapel known by the locals simply as the “Little Chapel.” In the 1840s, local vineyard owners began constructing the chapel in Neoclassical style. By 1846 the building had been completed and dedicated to the Holy Trinity. The small white-walled church is crowned with a pedimented façade, while its tower houses a single bell. The sanctuary ends in a semicircular apse, and in the choir loft the Högel harmonium, purchased at the end of the 19th century, is still playable today. At the time of its construction, the roof was still covered with wooden shingles. At the end of the Second World War, the chapel was mistaken for a watchtower and came under bombardment. Miraculously, only the shingled roof burned down; the interior of the chapel and its sacred paintings remained unharmed. Only after this did the building receive its present tiled roof. The chapel was most recently renovated in 1993. In 2003, decorative illumination was installed, allowing the brightly lit chapel to shine beautifully in the evenings above the Aranykagyló area on Külsőhegy Hill. In earlier times, Holy Mass was celebrated here on every feast day, while today services are held only on the chapel’s annual feast day. In front of the chapel stands one of the settlement’s most notable limestone crosses, traditionally decorated with wreaths in honor of soldiers fallen in war. Nearby can also be found a memorial dedicated to American soldiers who crashed in the area.
