We arrived in Jánosháza; here too we were taken outside the village and camped there. We had come about 17 km. The sights along the way continued to grow. It was quite warm, which made the thirst even worse while marching, but still no one was allowed to leave the column. Where we stopped briefly there was no well anyway. You can imagine — when we arrived, there was a well about 100 metres from our quarters. Now all 5,000 people want to drink at once. But it was a fine well, a pump — one man pumped into the trough and everyone got their turn in short order. I waited about 2 hours for water myself — and I was desperately thirsty. Today I won't eat supper either, as there is nothing to eat: I still have a little wheat, but it would need to be cooked, and after such exhaustion one is simply not capable of it. I found a little straw and lay down.

It seems we are not setting off today. Lunch was had. We received the dried bread at noon, along with a small piece of home-baked bread. I drank water and that was it. I kept a little of the home bread, even though the whole amount was very little. They are just now calling out to pack up — I don't know how far we are going or where. It also occurred to me that today is my birthday — a fine way to spend it!
