I might have slept well enough last night as it wasn't as cold, but the hard ground disturbed me. I couldn't find a comfortable position; the bare earth was cutting into my sides so badly. Again we received a slice of bread — naturally meant to last the whole day — which I dispatched in moments.

Apart from the small piece of bread, we received nothing today. I still have a little wheat in my pocket and I am gnawing on that. A dreadful situation — what will become of us? If this goes on much longer, I don't know how I will hold out. There isn't even water to drink. Just imagine 25,000 people crowded together with a single well — a sweep well — to supply them all. I am already so weak I can barely walk. I don't know what will happen to me if we have to go somewhere. In the afternoon there was a little rain and now there is water where we sleep. Tonight there will be no sleeping again. Dear God, if only He would turn our fate around. Even an animal would suffer to endure this. The days pass with terrible slowness. One daydreams constantly — this would be good, that would be good — but all the while things seem to only get worse. Today I also heard that the Germans have laid down their arms and are no longer fighting. I cannot change my underclothes as I have nothing else besides what I'm wearing, and I have no soap to wash them with if the opportunity arose. I don't know what will become of us!
